Sexual Abuse Treatment

When sexual abuse touches your life, getting therapy can be very daunting. You may fear that opening up the pain and secrecy will be more than you can bear. Counselling with an experienced trauma therapist can help you and your family members immensely. Barbara Browne has vast training and experience in treating survivors and family members, as well as sex offenders.

There are many long-term effects of sexual abuse. Physical and psychological symptoms are well documented in dealing with post-traumatic stress (PTSD).

The National Institute for the Clinical Application of Behavioral Medicine (NICABM) published an interesting interview about a study done by Kaiser Permanente and the Centers for Disease Control. The study correlated Adverse Childhood Experiences with chronic disease and made a strong case for a significant connection between the two:

  • Childhood trauma that remains untreated can result in a shorter life span
  • Trauma survivors have an increased chance of developing chronic disease such as:
       -Depression
       -Anxiety
       -Fibromyalgia
       -Cancer
       -Heart disease
       -Inflammatory illness
  • Can childhood trauma trigger cancer?
  • The relationship between trauma and heart disease
  • The link between childhood trauma and inflammation

Barbara Talks about Trauma

Patient Testimonial

“Hello, Barbara!

How are you? It’s one of your old patients. I received your letter in the mail and I wanted to say thank you!

I’m sorry I haven’t talked to you in so long; school has been very busy for me. How is the new office? I remember it was very cute and cozy.

I wanted to say thank you for all the advice and help you gave me over the years. It really helped having someone I could talk to and confide in. I am doing well in school, and my social life is fine. I am still having some trouble trusting men; however I am better than before. I’ve learned that if I get to know them through group interaction, then I am able to build a healthy, trusting relationship with them.

I just wanted to touch base and say thanks again!!”
